In popular culture there are a great deal of references to people who play poker, in movies, in songs, in books, you name it poker is the game. At this point in time there are no real references to online poker, or mobile poker that we know of, however the industry is still new and trends change quickly.

In the Norman Jewison film, “The Cincinnati Kid”, Steve McQueen (the Kid) and Edward G Robinson (the Man) play poker heads-up in 5 Card Stud. Ever since the film was released poker players have debating that a final hand could never come up when playing a game of heads-up in 5 card stud.

There is a memorable moment in the Chris de Burgh album “Spanish Train” during the song entitled after the album, when God and the Devil play poker for the souls of the dead. This is quite a dramatic reference to poker to say the least but it has certainly earned its place in popular culture.

Then there are all the instances in “Rolling Stone” magazine where musicians and actors have been referred to as being poker-faced. And believe it or not, in the TV Series of Star Trek – The Next Generation they also play poker, 5 Card Stud to be precise.

Apparently when the Beatles came to the US in 1964, they were enticed to play poker with Curt Gunther (Photographer). They were not very good at the game as Curt won a few hundred dollars from the Fab Four!
